Why is it important to maintain proper tire pressure?
Properly inflated tires are essential for safety. Lower or higher air pressures than the vehicle manufacturer recommends for the specific tires, speeds, and/or weight in the vehicle will cause uneven tire wear, unstable handling and increases the potential for a flat. Correct tire pressure extends tire life, increases fuel efficiency and ensures your vehicle steers, brakes and rides as the automaker intended. Always check and adjust the pressure in all four tires, including the spare.
What is cold tire pressure?
The recommended tire pressure is listed on a sticker inside the driver's door jam, on the inside of the fuel filler door, or both. These pressures may include a range of numbers depending on the tire size and how many passengers are in the vehicle. Performance vehicles may list additional pressures for driving at sustained high speeds. Match the pressure readings to your specific tire and use. Be aware that many cars specify different pressures for the front and rear tires.
What is cold tire pressure?
Automakers list tire pressures as "cold" so there is a baseline. For the most accurate cold reading, check the pressure after your car has sat overnight. Once you start driving, the air inside heats up and the pressure increases (typically by up to four psi depending on the ambient temperature). Adjusting the tire pressure when the tires are warm will give you an inaccurate indication of the cold pressure. While the recommended cold pressure never changes, tire pressure varies with the climate. It is normal for tires to gain or lose pressure during sudden swings in ambient temperature. As such, you'll need to adjust your cold tire pressure to match the conditions.
